Candle Q&A
My candle container turns black. Why?
The black is carbon soot. This is usually caused by an oversized
flame. Be sure you trim your wick to no more than 1/4" before
each burn for the life of the candle. A candle can be burned for
2-3 hours at a time before the wick needs trimming.
What is the best way to trim a wick?
After the candle is fully cooled (or before you light it) turn
the candle upside down to trim the wick to keep the burned wick
and soot from falling into the candle.
Remember!
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Blow out your candles when you leave the room.
- Never go to sleep with a lighted candle in the house.
- Keep candles away from flowing fabric (like curtains).
- Keep burning candles out of the reach of children or pets.
- Do not move a candle while it is burning or if the wax/gel is
still hot.
- Burn candles on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface.
- To prevent glassware from cracking, do not burn gel candles
that have burned down to 1/2 inch or less of the bottom of the
container.
- Always trim your wick to a length of 1/4-inch and center it
before you light it to keep smoking to a minimum.
- Extinguish taper or pillar candles when they get within 2"
of their holders.
- Recommended burning time is one hour per inch diameter.
- Keep candles away from drafts. Drafts will cause the candle
to burn unevenly.
- To prevent wax from splashing, hold your finger in front of
the flame as you blow the candle out. The air will flow around
your finger and extinguish the candle from both sides.
- Wrapping your candles in foil or plastic and refrigerating
them before use will make them burn more slowly and evenly.
- Keep wick trimmings and matches out of the melt pool.
Storage
- Always store candles in a cool, dark, and dry place.
- Store your candles upright to prevent warping.
Keep your candles out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
Cleaning
- Before you place a votive in its cup, put a few drops of water
in the cup to make it easier to clean the cup after the votive
has melted.
- Place used votive cups in the freezer for approximately 20
minutes to make cleaning the remaining wax easier.
- You can clean pillars and tapers with a piece of nylon or a
drop of salad oil on a soft cloth.
